The National Curriculum (2015) places a much stronger emphasis on children being able to spell words correctly. For Years 1 and 2 there are set 'exception' words that the children should be able to read and spell correctly, by the end of the year. These words will be sent as part of their weekly homework and the children will be tested in class. We also be looking at the children's written work to ensure that they are being spelt correctly; they will be encouraged to check and correct these when up-levelling and improving their work. In the EYFS the initial emphasis is on children using their sounds to spell phonetically. They will also learn to spell tricky words (some of which cross over with the Y1 words).
