Autumn 2023

Year 1

(1st half Term) - How Does the Story End?

Our topic this term focuses on traditional tales, allowing plenty of opportunity for role play, story retelling, exploring familiar characters and using repeated phrases. The children will be looking at a range of traditional tales, thinking about similarities and differences and links between them.

Our Science work looks at animals, including humans, and the children will be looking at animal diets and identifying carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. Part of this unit focuses on naming human body parts and links to our PSHE work on Changing Me.

We will be using tools safely to make story boxes in DT after exploring simple sliding and lever mechanisms. In Art we will be looking at the work of Benjamin Butler and using his work as inspiration to create our own background for our story boxes. These story boxes will then be used to support story retelling in Literacy.

During this term, Year 1 will have Forest School sessions on the school grounds.

(2nd Half Term) - How Were Toys Different In the Past?

After half term, the Year 1 topic changes and will be looking at the History of toys and how they have changed over the years. This will link to our Science work on materials, identifying the materials that objects are made from and how this has also changed in relation to toys. In Art we will be looking at the work of Jane Hissey as well as Wendy Tsao, a textile artist. Tsao will be our inspiration for designing and creating our own sock puppets in DT

Year 2

(3 week topic) - Can You Remember This?

Year 2 started the term with a mini topic to remember expectations and routines that they will need in Year 2. During this block, the children walked to the gallery of the Two-Faced Twins on Worthing seafront to gain inspiration for their upcoming work in Art and to complete sketches of local key buildings. These sketches will be used later in the term to create their own pieces of art after they have learned colour mixing skills.

(main Autumn topic) How Did The Victorians Live?

Following the mini topic, Year 2 begin a topic for the rest of the Autumn term that focuses on DT and History. The children will be finding out how Victorians lived and differences between life in the past and now. During this we will be taking them to the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum where they will be engaging in workshops related to Victorian school days and home life. In DT we will be looking at the moving mechanisms of a windmill and making our own moving structures.

Our work in Science this term looks at the suitability of materials for their purpose and includes a range of experiments and identification of materials as natural or man-made.

Year 1 Phonic screener

In June, all Year 1 children have to take the National Phonic Screener check. This is an assessment that checks their phonic knowledge by reading a range of real and alien words. Any children that do not reach the pass mark threshold have to re-sit the test in Year 2. All results will be reported to parents. If you require any further information about this check, please see Mrs Halley.
